At the COHRI Lab, our mission is to improve surgical care through discovery, collaboration, and meaningful quality improvement. Our work spans general surgery, elective surgery optimization, and implementation science, with the goal of translating evidence into better care and outcomes for patients, healthcare professionals, and communities.

Optimizing the Elective Surgery Journey

Successful surgical care begins well before an operation and continues throughout recovery. We study the full elective surgery journey, including patient preparation, clinical decision-making, care coordination, perioperative risk reduction, and postoperative recovery. By identifying modifiable risks and designing practical interventions, we aim to make elective surgery safer, more effective, and more responsive to each patient’s needs. 

Turning Evidence into Practice

Generating knowledge is only the first step. Through implementation science, we examine how evidence-based practices can be successfully adopted, adapted, and sustained in real-world surgical settings. We work to understand the barriers and facilitators that influence change, develop strategies tailored to different clinical environments, and ensure that proven approaches become part of routine care.
